Like many indies who suddenly knew success, Sun Records was on the verge of ruin. This situation is not as paradoxical as it seems at first glance: the recording studios were obliged to pay for everything at once and in full - interest, fees for pressing and printing, union dues, promotional materials - and distributors had the right to pay bills for ninety days. If the studio did not have a sufficient “gold reserve”, as in the case of “San”, one or two malicious debtors could upset this fragile balance.
