After the Renaissance itself, which, having freed itself from the gloomy spirit of the Middle Ages, rediscovered culture, education and spiritual beauty, the process of rethinking began around 1600. Not immediately, gradually, composers began to look for new forms and expressive opportunities, wrote music that, unlike the previous one, opened up scope for pathos and passionate feelings. These feelings were called "affects"; certain musical symbols were invented for them, sometimes passing through the whole work and determining its structure.
