On the nineteenth of October Liszt, with the same speed and inspiration with which he wrote "Hungary", completed one of his most ambitious works - "The Faust Symphony in Three Characteristic Pictures (by Goethe)" - Eine Faust-Symphonie in drei Charakterbildern (nach Goethe) . Each picture is part of a symphonic canvas: 1. Faust. 2. Gretchen. 3. Mephistopheles. Later, in 1857, Liszt added, as an epilogue, the final chorus, “All fleeting is a symbol, a comparison” (Alles Vergängliche ist nur Gleichnis), glorifying salvation through eternal femininity.
