The next day the hall was crowded. Liszt’s oratorio “Strasbourg Cathedral Bells”, conducted by the author, and Beethoven’s Fifth Concerto, in which Liszt performed the piano part and Hans Richter conducted the orchestra, sounded in the first section. Wagner played the timpani in the orchestra. The second section consisted entirely of fragments of the Valkyries, Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods; Wagner stood behind the conductor's console. All the funds from the concert went to the needs of the Festspielhaus building - that’s what Wagner called his theater in Bayreuth. The success of the concert was absolute!
