To some extent, the meaning of this sonata helps to understand one of Beethoven’s last songs, written in 1820 on the verses of Heinrich Goble - “An Evening Song under the Starry Sky”. This, apparently, was the very case when Beethoven did not perceive the most outstanding poems in terms of art as extremely close to his mentality and therefore immediately put them to music. Key of song and Sonata op. 109 is one and the same in E major, and this is no accident: Beethoven usually used it for texts in which he talked about nightly thoughts about death and immortality.
