Leaving for England, Haydn transferred Beethoven’s further education to the hands of Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, a composer of far from first rank, but an extremely competent music theorist. Albrechtsberger belonged to the same generation as Haydn and van Sviten: he was born in 1736 and, therefore, during his studies with Beethoven was approaching his sixtieth birthday. At that time, he was the bandmaster of St. Stephen's Cathedral. This place dreamed of receiving Mozart shortly before his death. He probably would have been delighted with the appointment of Albrechtsberger.
