Returning to Los Angeles in early February 1991, Guns spent the rest of the winter and early spring working on the album and preparing for their first tour as headliners. The background to their rehearsals was the bombing of Baghdad in February, which followed the Persian Gulf massacre. Expelled from Kuwait, Saddam Hussein furiously set fire to the oil lakes. The sky in the Middle East turned black and the most apocalyptic picture appeared since Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Axl Rose was fascinated by these images, like several years ago by the Death Faces cassettes.
