Perhaps the most significant and objective word in defense of Liszt was Bela Bartok's report, “Liszt Problems,” read at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on February 3, 1936, almost half a century after the death of a brilliant fellow countryman: “We can only partially charge Ferenc with Liszt for his false conclusions; from all that he had the opportunity to see and hear, he could hardly draw a different conclusion than that which follows from his book. Moreover, just the opposite, the courage with which he expresses his bona fide, albeit erroneous opinion, causes respect. ”
