The sharp contrast between the most ordinary childhood and incredible success has long puzzled him. The incomprehensibility of this phenomenon, which went beyond the scope of his understanding, spurred a spiritual search into which he had delved into since the mid-sixties. He was constantly worried that the wheel of fortune could turn sharply again, and with each passing year he was more and more afraid of growing old. In early 1964, he categorically refused to celebrate his 29th birthday in the hope of forgetting that in a year he would be thirty. It was on the eve of this fateful boundary that he followed the path of self-contemplation.
