By the time the Thirty-Three Variations on Waltz Diabelli was completed, the English piano, the “Apollo’s Altar,” was no longer in the best condition. He was dear to the composer as a sign of international recognition of his work. But in 1824, Beethoven had another tool built by the Viennese master Conrad Graf. In the hope that the deafened composer would be able to hear at least individual sounds, the Count supplied each key not with three strings, as usual, but with four. However, Beethoven, although he periodically approached the piano and even played it, felt only certain vibrations; his hearing died completely.
