At the time of meeting Beethoven, both the poet and his companion were far from young - Tidge was about sixty years old, Recke was fifty-seven. The countess came from a noble count family von Medem (her half-sister Dorothea in marriage became the Princess of Courland). At the age of seventeen, Eliza was married to Count von der Recke, with whom she could not get along; in 1781 a divorce followed. In 1797, the countess moved to Germany, where she took up literary work and became close to Tidge. Tidge and Rekka kept a salon in Dresden, where USA immigrants also came.
