After a divorce from her husband, Erica worked first in a soft drinks factory, then as a waitress, and then, after moving to West Berlin, she became the director of a small restaurant. Although they both speak of their poverty, there is no sign of a fierce struggle for existence in their apartment. Bettina has a separate room, has her own TV and cassette recorder. She works in a pyrotechnic factory: she inserts fuses in the so-called “Roman candles” (a kind of firework). She begins work at 6.30 and ends at 16.30. Earns 80 pounds a week. Spends money mainly on clothes.
