Life in Vienna was expensive. Only the richest and most aristocratic aristocrats could afford to have a palace inside the city walls. Many nobles and wealthy merchants acquired apartment buildings in which they had their own apartments, while others rented out apartments. The usual rental periods were St. Michael's Day (September 29) and St. George's Day (April 25). In the spring, many townspeople left for the countryside, and in the fall sometimes moved into another apartment. This explains the amazing variety of Beethoven's Vienna addresses: there are more than thirty of them. Mozart also moved quite often.
