He was painted by the famous portrait painter Josef Karl Stieler (1781–1858), who arrived in Vienna in the winter of 1820. The order was made by the spouses Franz and Anthony Brentano. As can be established from colloquial notebooks, the composer was in the workshop of Stieler five times, from February 11 to the beginning of April 1820; in May, the portrait was already on display at an art exhibition in Vienna, so that everyone could see it. Most likely, the artist previously discussed with Beethoven the concept of the image.
