Mindful of the infectious hysteria at church services he attended a few months ago at Rev. Brewster’s Baptist Church, having been heavily influenced by fiery shows hosted by rhythm and blues kings on Bill Street, Elvis broke with the static behavior of country singers. His eyes closed, a shadow ran across his face, his legs began to tremble frantically, his hips hesitated; he showed with his body language that he was experiencing his songs, and did not tell them with the detachment that befits a decent American society, where excessive manifestation of feelings was perceived as bad taste.
