On February 2, 1843, Wagner received an invitation to come to the theater management bureau, where he was solemnly presented with a royal rescript, according to which the composer "was appointed bandmaster of His Majesty with a lifelong maintenance of 1,500 thalers per year." Life seemed to be getting better. But still, fear did not leave Wagner's heart; he was afraid that again - as in Lauchstedt, Magdeburg, Königsberg and Riga - he would become a hostage to his post, would plunge into the routine of inevitable backstage intrigues, would spend most of his time and energy on official duties at the expense of creativity.
