Beethoven’s stoic courage during his serious illness, the heroic struggle against death until the last minute of agony, and then the posthumous apotheosis so deserved by him - all this can be regarded as a kind of miraculous work of art, for, as Grillparzer correctly understood, the very essence of Beethoven’s personality, in everything he strove to reach the end and even to cross the borders, designated by mere mortals. Although in the last months of his life he could not compose music, all his thoughts, words and deeds were added to the Tenth Symphony, the scattered sketches of which remained on his music stand.
