The famous guitar phrase that begins with "Sweet Child" was born out of jest. Slash played this funny bust in the studio, just to warm his fingers, but the Clink recorded it and Axl liked it. He remembered the text he had been working on, but eventually abandoned: “When Slash and Izzy started working on the song together, I also connected. Izzy played the rhythm, and suddenly this text popped into my head. ” Composition was, as Axl noted, the first positive love song he wrote - the exact opposite of Back Off Bitch and other Axl’s paranoid female-hating manifestos.
