The enlightenment of color continues in the third part, Adagio cantabile. The harsh D minor gives way to the emanating coolish radiance in B flat major. The first theme is reminiscent of church choral, in which the awesome singing of the string choir is answered, like an echo, by wind phrases. As you vary, the theme becomes more humane, and it is replaced twice by a melody in the genre of a slow, almost ghostly minuet - a dance that was almost forgotten in the 1820s. Adagio is perceived as a dream of quiet happiness, which is possible only in Christian Paradise or in ancient Elysium, where blessed souls are found.
