At a public premiere on April 7, 1805, the future Heroic was simply called the New Great Symphony. It was only in October 1806 that the Third Symphony found its final name - Sinfonia Eroica, but with a puzzling note: “Composed in honor of the memory of a great man” (Composta per festeggiare il sovvenire d'un grand Uomo). Whether Beethoven buried his past illusions connected with Napoleon, or was this “great man” meant someone else (sometimes it is believed that it could be Louis Ferdinand, who died heroically on October 10, 1806) - again a mystery that has no definite response.
