On his orders, his brother, the dwarf Mime, forged a helmet that makes its owner invisible, as well as endowing him with the ability to transform into any creature. Alberich, casting a spell, puts on his helmet and becomes invisible. Mime, mistaking Wotan and Loge for the simple wanderers, tells them about the magical properties of the helmet. Wotan and Loge take possession of the helmet by deception and enslave Alberich. He can be freed only at the cost of his treasures. Alberich agrees to everything, just to save the ring. But Wotan takes it too. Then Alberich curses the ring and predicts its owner death ...
