With the onset of 1860, Wagner thought that fate had finally begun to favor him. The music publisher from Mainz, Franz Schott, expressed his desire to put some new Wagner piece into the annual catalog. The composer offered The Rhine Gold, and Schott guaranteed payment of a fee of ten thousand francs.
