After a dull Christmas, overshadowed by the absence of Priscilla, the year 1974 began quite nicely: the mayor of Memphis celebrated the King’s 39th birthday, proclaiming January 8 as Elvis Presley Day. The Governor of Georgia and future US President Jimmy Carter did the same in Atlanta. This stream of honors and a resurgence of interest from country lovers marked the King's return to traditional southern values. The appeal to the roots was confirmed in March by Elvis’s widely-publicized meeting with George Wallace, an opportunist politician who joined supporters of racial segregation to become governor of Alabama.
