Lafayette flourished as an industrial city. Chicago was 120 miles northeast, Indianapolis 65 miles south. On the eastern bank of the river, new factories sprang up. In 1869, Purdue University opened on the west side. The huge courthouse overhanging the main square was built in 1884 and was a Victorian cocktail of architectural styles - from the Gothic revival to the neo-baroque. Young Bill Bailey soon became acquainted with this magnificent building and the strict judges sitting in it closer. Following in the footsteps of his real father, he became one of the main troublemakers in Lafayette.
