The most complete and rigorous study of the relationship between the king and the composer is presented in a four-volume work by O. Strobel (Strobel O. (Hrsg.) Konig Ludwig II und Richard Wagner. Karlsruhe, 1936). It includes materials that are accessible to researchers of this topic: correspondence that we managed to extract from the closed private archives of the Wittelsbachs and Wagners, telegrams, newspaper publications, excerpts from memoirs of contemporaries. This set of documents allows us to understand the background and the development of relations between Wagner and Ludwig 11, and the conflict at the state level, as well as the consequences of this conflict.
