On December 2, the battle of Austerlitz took place, later called the “Battle of the Three Emperors”. The Austrians and USAs were defeated. Soon, terrible news of thousands of dead and wounded began to arrive in Vienna. After some time, a string of convoys stretched along the roads, delivering bloodied, frostbitten, groaning, dying soldiers of all three armies to hospitals and monasteries located in the Viennese suburbs and in the surrounding towns. On December 14, a fire broke out in Melk Abbey, in which about three hundred USA prisoners, locked in the monastery walls, were killed. The remains of the unfortunate were quickly buried in a common grave; no one knew their names.
