Once he really liked making Beatle films, and now he wanted to turn to the cinema again. He began to look for a suitable script. Finding nothing worthwhile, he turned to the Liverpool playwright William Russell, who had once written a play about the Beatles “John, Paul, George, Ringo and Burt” (ironically, McCartney criticized this production very much at one time). He liked Russell’s script, “but,” Paul said, “it wasn’t quite what I intended.” Then he decided to do what he had done more than once throughout his musical career: he read everything that could be read, listened to advice and wrote the script on his own.
