Vernon knew firsthand about the housing problem: he could not call his wife and son to Memphis when he worked there, due to the inability to find an apartment. Even more so than unemployment, housing shortages were a serious obstacle for the most modest families who decided to settle in the city. Before leaving, Vernon Presley hit the road several times to Memphis in search of an apartment, but in vain, and was forced to settle with his family for some time in furnished rooms at 370 Washington Street until he found a house at 572 on Poplar Avenue.
