In the castellan’s story, despite inaccuracies (the battle of Austerlitz was in 1805, and not in 1806), there are interesting details that are absent in other memoirs. Beethoven’s refusal does not look quite spontaneous here: the composer made it clear to the prince in advance that he did not want to speak, explaining the reason - therefore, his decision was not a whim. The very moment of a quarrel in the castellan’s memoirs is smoothed out and presented only as Beethoven’s secret escape from the castle; the presence of a harsh letter to the prince, however, is confirmed, although his text is not the same as that given in Weiser’s memoirs.
