It seems that the generation of “great lions” is already dying out. Today there are many fantastic musicians who demonstrate outstanding technical skills and probably have something to say, but when I try to compare them with Heifetz, Menukhin, Oistrakh or Kreisler, Rubinstein, Horowitz or Presler, I am overwhelmed by doubts. As for the generation younger than me, these doubts only intensify. No matter how high the technical level, which is given today at higher musical schools and conservatories, or which I recently noted as a member of the jury of the Queen Elizabeth competition held in Brussels, it still seems to me that the inspiration that illuminated the great elders is unlikely to return.
