In the spring of 1992, Guns N 'Roses were supposed to spend two months traveling around Europe, but by early May plans for summer concerts had not been confirmed. None of the Guns wanted to stop the tour. (At that time, they all lived only on tour.) There were rumors that Axl planned to call for Nirvana to warm up in the summer, but Kurt Cobain refused, saying he hated Guns N 'Roses and their “dumb-headed fans”. Instead, on May 12, at a press conference in the Hollywood club Gaslight, Slash and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich announced that the two groups would tour together in the summer. (When discussing the terms, Metallica wisely chose to speak first, as in this case their payment did not depend on the delay of the Guns.)
