Scholes was one of the first to see the prospects for the record industry in Nashville, the emerging capital of the country, after the rise of the popularity of Grand Ole Opry. The leadership of ARC did not consider it appropriate to open an office so far from New York, and Scholes initially had to record artists in the Nashville Presbyterian Church. The agreement came to an end when the pastor found a hidden bottle of vodka under one of the benches and drove Scholes, declaring him an agent of the Communists. Scholes then opened a recording studio in the dilapidated building of the Methodist Broadcasting Channel, officially laying the foundation for a thriving industry that later brought a fortune to the capital of Tennessee.
