In late March, Matilda Wesendonck announced to Wagner her desire to arrange a “musical morning” on the occasion of her husband’s birthday. Wagner supported the idea and volunteered to form an orchestra and perform excerpts from Beethoven's works. Before the concert, Vesendonki presented Wagner with a gift - an ivory conductor made of Semper’s drawing, decorated with the finest carvings. The holiday was a success.
