Axl Rose used his free time to polish vocal tracks for “Use Your Illusion”. Axl called on Blind Melon vocalist Shannon Hoon to sing high harmonies for most new ballads. Hun was from Lafayette, like Axl and Izzy. (He was also supposedly distantly related to Axl and also had police drives at school for petty hooliganism.) Shannon followed Axl to Hollywood and finally managed to get in touch with Rose when the Blind Melon demo received a half million advance from Capitol Records ". Shannon’s light boyish soprano set off Axl’s hoarse vocals in the new key songs “The Garden” and “Don't Cry” and gave Guns ballads a smoother, cleaner sound.
