At the beginning of the 1998 session, Democracy moved to Rumbo Sound, where workers hung tapestries, set colored lighting and other attributes of starry life. Matt Sorum was fired and replaced by drummer Josh Freeze. Replacing Slash was Robin Fink, a member of the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. Dizzy Reid and Paul Hughes remained in the group. Duff was replaced by Tommy Stinson of The Replacements. The new producer was Yus (Martin Glover). Geffen desperately needed a hit record so that the label did not become a victim of a corporate meat grinder. They explained to Axl that the fate of the group was at stake, and gave him a million dollars in advance, promising another million as a bonus if the album was completed by March 1999.
