I must say that Wagner received the news of the siege of Paris with enthusiasm. And here patriotism played a role. He selfishly felt avenged for all his own failures and humiliations experienced in Paris. Back in November, he anticipated the imminent fall of Paris with the genius of his surrender pamphlet, Capitulation, which tarnished him no less than he did in his time, Jewishness in Music. The fact that “Capitulation” was written almost after such a penetrating work as “Beethoven” only confirms the idea that we expressed earlier that Wagner’s literary heritage should be treated as critically as possible. After all, it seems that these two works simply cannot belong to the pen of one person.
