Due to its southern proletarian origin, Presley was, in the eyes of American conservatives, the epitome of degradation. The intellectual North has traditionally looked down on the South, and even more so on its lower classes, while the elite of the former Confederates saw in the “white scum” the main reason for their decline; it is not surprising that the sudden transformation of the “white poor” into a star caused brutal brutality from everyone who was still looking at post-war America through the prism of the past. But the nascent provincial petty bourgeoisie rejoiced at the success of the artist, seeing in him his own: the Presley phenomenon became in her eyes the realization of two hundred years of aspirations, when the founders of the republic guaranteed the very insignificant same chance of success as the elite.
