Beethoven’s relationship with General Bernadotte is one of the mysterious pages of the composer's biography. If we discard all fictional liberties, the essence of the events was reduced to only two undeniable facts: Beethoven’s acquaintance with the French Republic ambassador in Vienna and friendship with violinist and composer Rodolf Kreutzer, who had arrived in the ambassador’s retinue. But already these two facts pose a number of questions to any thoughtful biographer. How was Beethoven among the visitors of the embassy, ​​around which a hostile situation developed from the very first days? Many of his patrons were opposed to the reconciliation of Austria with France: the princes Lobkowitz and Schwarzenberg, Count Thun, Count Razumovsky. Perhaps only Prince Likhnovsky did not share their position.
