Marie considered the native languages ​​German and French: she spent her early childhood in Germany, and in 1809 the family moved to France, to her father’s homeland. Soon, the girl showed a clear penchant for literature. Horace, Ovid, Voltaire, myths and the history of Ancient Greece became her favorite reading. Subsequently, Marie was pleased to tell how once, when she was only 11 years old, she met a friendly old man in the garden who, "stroking her golden hair, said a few welcome words addressed to her." It was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who, according to Marie, thus blessed her with literary work. It is hard to say how reliable this episode is, but it is truly akin to the Listovsky legend of Beethoven’s kiss!
