Who was this music intended for? .. Beethoven himself didn’t perform in concerts anymore, and solo piano sonatas at that time weren’t accepted to be included in the program of concert academies. For performance in secular salons Sonata op. 106 clearly did not fit. It remains to be assumed that the poetic words from Beethoven’s letter to Broadwood, given as an epigraph to this chapter, should be taken quite seriously: the new music written for the new piano was intended for Apollo himself - or for that higher principle, which Beethoven preferred to call simply the Divine (Gottheit). This music was to be written, regardless of what contemporaries would say and think about it, and it doesn’t matter at all whether they can even understand anything in it.
