Speculators from the frontier paid five dollars for the land of the Indians and in 1824 laid down a city named after the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolution, who at one time made an invaluable contribution to the development of the United States. The riverbanks were low, suitable for unloading and loading ships, so trade began by itself. In 1826, Lafayette became the center of Tippecano County and managed to flourish by the start of the Civil War in 1860. In Indiana, slavery was illegal, and the state sent troops of its sons to the battle in the name of the Union. After the bloody war, with a relatively small proportion of the black population, racist views were widespread in urban and farming communities. In many Indiana cities, the Ku Klux Klan membership was considered honorable in the 1920s.
