Fashion for such societies was widespread in Germany in the 18th century. Usually in a certain city a circle appeared, uniting aristocrats and educated burghers (teachers, doctors, lawyers, artists), who established a kind of club with small membership dues. Books were bought for these contributions and newspapers and magazines were subscribed. Members of the company either rented a certain room, or one of them provided a room for use in their own house. The Institute of Public Public Libraries was not yet developed; libraries of universities, monasteries, palaces and private individuals were not open to all comers. Books and magazines were expensive, and not everyone interested could buy what they wanted (young Beethoven certainly could not!).
