Peter Melrose was extremely modest about his book. When I praised what I liked about her, a blush appeared through the red skin of his face, and he accepted my criticism with such self-humiliation that he almost led me into confusion. He received very little money for the book, and his publishers gave him a small monthly content to pay for the next book. He had just begun it, but he wanted to go away to write in silence, and, knowing that I live on the Riviera, asked me if there was a cheap calm place with sea bathing. I suggested he come and spend several days with me so that he could look around until he found something suitable for himself. When I made him such an offer, he was all red-hot, and his green eyes sparkled.
