It was at this time that young Liszt experienced the first serious emotional crisis. He was in his sixteenth year; he stood on the threshold of a new stage of life and subconsciously feared it. Extremely tired of endless moving from place to place and years of hard work, accepted at the royal courts and in luxurious salons, and at the same time, since childhood, obliged to give concerts without rest in order to support his family, divorced from his beloved mother and full of youthful contradictions, Ferenc suddenly decided to break up with such life and join the monastic order. Instead of many hours of exercise, he selflessly read the New Testament, deeply imbued with Christian ideas. His reference book was the treatise of Thomas Campius (1379-1471) "On the imitation of Christ," written no later than 1427.
