Solo parts in parts from the Mass and in the finale of the Ninth Symphony performed opera "stars": two young prima donnas, soprano Henrietta Zontag (1806–1854, future Countess of USA) and contralto Carolina Unger (circa 1803–1877, in the marriage of Unger-Sabatier), and tenor Anton Heitzinger (1796–1869) and bass Joseph Seipelt (1787–1847). Cheerful, sociable and witty Unger visited Beethoven several times, flirting with him a little, which flattered his vanity, and then introduced him to her friend Sontag, even more charming, but not so funny. Beethoven called these singers “beautiful witches” and on May 12 sent a letter of thanks to Henrietta Sontag for her participation in the concert (Unger probably received the same letter, but it did not survive).
