Indeed, in fact, the first performances of The Flying Dutchman were held on the same Schroeder-Devrient in the role of Senta. Other singers were simply unable to convey the author’s intention to the public. Seeing firsthand how much the fate of his creation depends on the qualifications of the artists, Wagner moved with leaps and bounds to implement his opera reform, designed to equalize music, poetry and stage art in importance.
