In the version of the Neugassian portrait, which was kept by Brunswick, the whiteness of a shirt and a neckerchief is shaded by a golden ribbon for a lornet hidden in the inside pocket of a pale pink vest. Lornet was a fashion accessory, and Rhys recalled that Beethoven willingly tackled beautiful ladies on the street and in the theater. In the version made for Likhnovsky, the tape for the lornet is not visible, but Beethoven’s shoulders are wrapped in a wide dark blue cloak, similar to the one that clothed the figure of the composer in the Meler portrait. Although Beethoven’s clothes in both versions do not have any adornments, it is clear to the viewer that a very unusual person is depicted here, succeeding in his own way and striving for new successes. His not too beautiful, but strong-willed and inspired face can be called anything, but not simple.
