Unfortunately, Jerry and Mike were independent minds, and the success of the hits that they had already written for Elvis prompted them to offer him directly, bypassing Parker, their latest novelties. He was furious at such disrespect and expected only an excuse to get rid of them. The case turned up when Leiber and Stoller invited the Aberbach brothers, the publishers of Elvis, to use it in the film adaptation of Nelson Algren's novel. This prominent representative of the American counterculture, who was at one time the lover of Simone de Beauvoir, was one of the main anti-conformists of his generation. His name came to the fore thanks to the film Otto Preminger “A Man with a Golden Hand” (1956) with Frank Sinatra in the title role; in the same year, Algren published the novel “A Walk in the Dissolute Quarter”.
