The rapprochement with Matilda Wesendonck was the impetus that finally forced Wagner to begin developing the plot of Tristan and Isolde. In a single impulse, he almost completed the first act of drama. And here, as if ironically, in September, Hans von Bülow arrived in Zurich with his young wife Cosima, daughter of Liszt. Most recently, on August 18, they married and went on a kind of honeymoon - to Wagner, whose worship of music brought them closer. Wagner invited the newlyweds to settle in the Vault. At one time and in one place were the three main women in Wagner's life, his past, present and future: Minna, Matilda and Cosima. Almost nothing connected him with the past, the present was bleeding with a suffering heart, the future was covered with a veil of obscurity.
