The first rehearsal of the new band took place at Silver Lake Studios in May 1985. Someone distracted Stephen Adler while Izzy and Duff hid all the extra drums from his installation, reducing the almost comic metal set to a more primitive, punk simplicity. Duff recalled: “The moment we started the first chord, something happened. We all felt it. ” At first Axl just stood with a bottle of beer in his hand in front of the amplifier and listened to how it all sounded. And then he began to sing. Duff: “Suddenly, Axl started to sing, and that was exactly what I needed. I don’t know how he succeeded, I don’t know how Slash succeeded, but we did it, really did. We were only twenty years old, Duff says, but we already thought we were real veterans. And they thought: “Here she is, a group. This is what we all were looking for. ”
